Welcome to Class 1 at Storth CE Primary School

Class 1 is home to our young learners, aged 3–5 years, and includes our brand‑new Nursery classroom and our Reception classroom. Together, these spaces form a warm, nurturing, and inspiring Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) unit where children enjoy their educational journey with curiosity, confidence, and joy.

Nursery and Reception begin their mornings in separate learning spaces, allowing each group to enjoy phonics, maths and further learning sessions tailored to their stage of development. This dedicated time also gives children the chance to explore their environment with peers of a similar age, helping them grow in confidence and independence.”

In the afternoons, our Nursery and Reception children join together to share the learning space. This mixed‑age environment nurtures social skills, cooperation, care for others, and learning through shared experiences.

We have a secure, enclosed outdoor area shared with Little Herons, our two‑year‑old provision. This shared space allows children to explore the natural world, develop physical skills, and engage in imaginative play in a safe and inviting environment.

Our Learning Environment

Our new Nursery room and our Reception classroom are thoughtfully designed to support early learning through play, exploration, and meaningful interaction. Each area is carefully equipped to encourage independence, creativity, and a love of learning.

Across the day, children access all areas of our rich continuous provision. They are encouraged to explore, investigate, and follow their own interests through open‑ended play, supported by thoughtful enhancements that extend learning and spark imagination. Whether indoors or outdoors, our EYFS environment is a place where every child can thrive, develop resilience, and discover the joy of learning.

Class 1 follows a series of exciting themes throughout the year, changing every few weeks to keep learning fresh, engaging, and inspiring. From exploring the seasons and celebrating special events to diving into space, traditional tales, and ideas sparked by the children’s own interests, our curriculum grows and evolves to make sure every child stays curious and enthusiastic about their learning.

We are proud to offer an EYFS experience that values the whole child—supporting their wellbeing, nurturing their individuality, and helping them grow into confident, capable, and compassionate learners.

Phonics

At Storth CE Primary School, our Nursery and Reception children follow the systematic synthetic phonics programme Read Write Inc. to develop strong early reading skills through daily phonics sessions. In Nursery, the programme focuses on building phonological awareness through listening, speaking, rhymes, and hearing sounds in words. This foundation helps children tune into the sounds around them so that, when they enter Reception, they are ready to learn the 44 letter‑sound correspondences and begin blending sounds to read

words. In Reception, children take part in daily Read Write Inc. lessons where they learn new sounds, practise blending to read, segmenting to spell, reading phonically decodable books, learning tricky words, and beginning to write simple words and sentences with increasing independence and confidence.

Reading to your child and listening to them read as they begin to develop early literacy skills is one of the most valuable ways to support their learning. We encourage you to sharing stories with your child which helps build their vocabulary, imagination, and understanding of the world, while also strengthening early communication and attention skills. When you listen to your child read, you encourage their confidence, celebrate their progress, and help them develop a positive, lifelong relationship with books.

A Strong Focus on Speaking, Language and Communication

Communication is at the heart of everything we do in Class 1. We place a strong emphasis on rich conversations, vocabulary development, storytelling and role play, listening and attention, and nurturing confidence in speaking. Our staff model high‑quality language throughout the day and provide frequent, meaningful opportunities for children to share ideas, build relationships, and grow as confident communicators.

Forest School

Our Early Years children enjoy weekly Forest School sessions on site, giving them valuable time to explore, play, and learn in the natural environment. These outdoor experiences help children develop confidence, curiosity, and a deep connection with nature while having plenty of fun along the way. Through hands‑on activities, teamwork, and seasonal exploration, our Forest School sessions nurture independence, resilience,
