Forest Schools
At Storth CE Primary School we are proud to offer a Forest School programme, providing pupils with the opportunity to learn in the great outdoors. Through regular sessions in natural woodland settings, which is part of our school grounds. Children develop independence, confidence, and a deeper connection to the environment. Activities are designed to encourage exploration, teamwork, and resilience, making the learning experience both fun and memorable.
Forest Schools help foster a lifelong appreciation for nature, while supporting children’s personal and social skills through hands-on experiences. We believe that outdoor learning can inspire curiosity and creativity, and our dedicated staff ensure that each session is both safe and engaging for all participants.
We adapt each session to the age and ability of the children involved, as we feel it is important that inclusion of all is paramount. All children are required to wear appropriate clothing for the weather, such as warm clothes and waterproofs.
Sessions begin with a warmup of games on the grass, and then we move to the forest to talk about safety rules around the fire circle. The children then have freedom to explore the forest at their own pace, and this encourages deeper learning through digging, looking at minibeasts, climbing trees and playing in the mud kitchen. We come together mid-session to enjoy a snack, warm drink and to reflect on how the session is going to be able to extend for the next week’s session.
Sessions are led by a level 3 Forest Schools-trained leader who has planned and created a safe environment for children to assess their own risks through play.
