Introduction to Our Early Years Maths Progression

At Storth School, we believe that early mathematical learning lays the foundation for confident, curious, and capable learners. In the Early Years, children begin to make sense of the world around them by exploring number, shape, pattern, and measure through meaningful, hands‑on experiences. Our approach focuses on developing a deep understanding, allowing children to build secure knowledge that will support them throughout their mathematical journey.

Our Maths Progression document outlines the key skills and concepts children encounter as they move through the Early Years. It reflects the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and Birth to Five Matters and supports a curriculum that is practical, playful, and rooted in real-life contexts. Through rich environments, purposeful interactions, key vocabulary, and carefully planned opportunities, children develop the ability to reason, solve problems, and talk confidently about their mathematical thinking.
